2022 Projected Stocking Report Draft is out...

Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game (ADFG) has released their 2022 Projected Stocking Report.  Here is a quick post to share my opinions, thoughts, and strategies on the topic.


Since 99% of where I fish is in the Interior, I'll focus my opinions on that portion.  The areas that are part of this region include the areas surrounding Fairbanks, Delta, and Glenallen.

The long and short is this is a reprint of the November 2021 draft.  I see no obvious changes in numbers by size or numbers by location that jump out at me.

You're reading this going "what's this all mean, Mr. Jon?"  Simple answer is this is just planning information.  Knowing where ADFG intends on stocking as a whole, and what species they intend to stock, and at what breeding capacity determines how I plan my fishing spree once all the ice starts to break up on the lakes and rivers in the Interior.

In more simpler terms, each region's report breaks it down into the following:

* the projected count of fish, by species, by life stage (x number of catchable, x number of fingerlings)

* by species, the projected count of fish by lake (for rainbows, x go to this lake, and y goes to this lake, and breaks it down by catchable and fingerlings)

Around January I start planning my fishing expeditions in the region, in accordance with the 5 P's (Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance).  This report helps that.  

It also fervors and solidifies my plans for a few weekends in the Glenallen region.  The Glenallen region, coined by the town's name of Glenallen, is known worldwide as "Copper River Salmon" territory, however just a quick glance at a map tells any angler there is more than just the salmon runs in that region.

You also need to pass through the Glenallen region to reach Valdez.  Valdez is a popular place for Salmon and Halibut and hosts fishing derbies (links below).

At an initial glance, this year is going to be good for fishing the Interior

Fishing in AK: the Hooligan

Caught Off Guard  In spring of 2021, when I decided I would be more proactive with my fishing knowledge and become more of an active fisherman, I came across several Facebook pages about fishing in Alaska.  This was roughly late March 2021.  Similar posts continued all the way into late May. I was caught off guard.  Several people were posting about how the Hooligan were running and showing very large ice chests and coolers full of these little silver fish.  I didn't understand, and I did a little research then, but the "runs" were over by the time I got any planning.  I had many questions about Hooligan, what they were used for, etc.  The biggest question is how do I participate in this event? Random Word: Discombobulated

 Another day, another word.  This time I was given the word "Discombobulated" by a good friend of mine.  As usual, I will define the word, then write about how it relates to tabletop gaming, fishing, and 3D printing. According to Websters Dictionary, the word "Discombobulated" is defined as informally to be confused or disordered.  It is the past tense of "Discombobulate" which is defined as to cause or be in a state of confusion, upset, or disorientated.
