Random Word: Discombobulated

Image
Another day, another word.  This time I was given the word "Discombobulated" by a good friend of mine.  As usual, I will define the word, then write about how it relates to tabletop gaming, fishing, and 3D printing. According to Websters Dictionary, the word "Discombobulated" is defined as informally to be confused or disordered.  It is the past tense of "Discombobulate" which is defined as to cause or be in a state of confusion, upset, or disorientated. Discombobulate Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster As the word "Discombobulated" applies to tabletop gaming, I can think of two different instances where it applies.  The first one applies to Dungeons and Dragons and the second one applies to tabletop wargaming. First, the Dungeons and Dragons aspect.  There is a Confused condition, which is the most direct application to the character, and the spell "Confusion" which applies said condition.  Most directly, the target of the con...

Tabletop: A Return to the Battlefield, Part Two

Image
This is a Part Two to my previous entry "A Return to the Battlefield."  This will be my After Action Review of my experience at the local tournament I recently attended. My standings were abysmal.  In short: **  My first game was against Jeff and his hyper-competitive Black Templars list.  With my paint score, I accumulated 27 / 100 points **  My second game was against a familiar army of Blood Angels and a novice appointment.  He conceded middle of round 2, so I ended up with well over 100 points (this is bad). **  Due to my sudden points jump, I fought against Wallace, another hyper-competitive player, whom I've never faced before, and a Psyker-Shooter-heavy army of Thousand Sons, which I've never faced off against before.  This game I only got the 10 points for being painted :(  What went right... ** My tactics were sound enough, but could be better. ** When I could pull them off, they did their job.  They held objectives if and when ...

FNF: The Sun Fights with the Snow (Safety Bit)

Image
Ladies and Gentlemen, we begin the most audacious fight of the season.  The Sun, our most prestigious resource on the planet, has officially declared a fight with the Snow.  This will more sound like a PSA or a Safety Bit. This year, Fairbanks had received a record of snowfall that the city / region has not seen since 1992.  In that winter, it was ~139 inches.  This year it was ~92 inches.  The average between 1991-2020 was ~65 inches. Fairbanks snowfall statistics | Sonot Kkaazoot This brings up a couple of topics (fights) that are worth mentioning.  The first fight to bring up is the fight between the Snow Load and the rating of your roof.   With all this excessive amount of snow, it is best to check your roof.  Any home built after '96 has ~50 pounds per square inch of load tolerance, with a decrease in tolerance as the older the building is, with something ~30 pounds per square inch for buildings built in the 60's.  If you're in the ...

Random Word: F[iretr]uck

Image
Today we are all having a so-so/bad day in the office... one of those "if it ain't one thing its another" kind of days.  I asked one of my co-workers for a Random Word and he gave me F[iretr]uck.  This one might be a bit difficult, but here we go.  To summarize, I will use the word (or associated synonym/meaning/intent in this particular instance), give its definition, and write about how it applies to tabletop gaming, fishing, and 3D printing. As defined by Meriam-Webster, the definition is defined in an obscene or vulgar manner as to copulate or breed, used as a transitive verb to express emotions of anger, contempt, disgust, etc., or used as a transitive verb to represent being cheated/slighted/screwed over Fuck Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster ------------------------------------------------------------------------- First, tabletop gaming, and yet for the third post now I find myself talking about "That Guy" again, or TG for short.  He is the one ...

Tabletop: A Return to the Battlefield

Image
As winter wanes and spring pushes ever closer, the snow in Interior Alaska is melting, covid is subsiding, and that means all the tabletop nerds are emerging from their deep hibernating sleep.  Alas, my readers, for I am one of these hibernating nerds. This Saturday will be my first real tournament is several months, not since before Christmas.  I have a "tried and true" list of models that I like to use, as it pays homage to both family, and my love for another game called BattleTech.  My friends like to poke fun, call it the "geriatric unit" or "the old folks home field trip" and they mean it in good jest. To be honest, I do not feel that I am ready.  Five days out is still a good ways away, and I ran this particular formation for over a year, so the tactic is engrained.  Still, I don't feel I'm ready.  Have I stepped away from the game too long?  Has that thirst for destruction of my enemies before me been slated? I've played some BattleTec...

Random Word: Pooper

Image
My extended family has a group chat, and I reached out there today for my Random Word.  Normally, its the first word response in a chat, or if in person its the first word in 3 seconds.  Today, the word for my Random Word blog is "Pooper."  I will define the word, and then write about how the word applies to tabletop gaming, fishing, and 3D printing. According to Webster's dictionary at  Pooper | Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster  "pooper" takes on the adjective role in the term "party pooper" or "pooper-scooper".  To summarize, it is either someone intentionally ruining fun or its feces.  To put it in more adult terms - a "Pooper" is that Asshole who ruins your fun.  Definitions.com also makes a point that your "pooper" is your anus. First, tabletop wargaming shall be discussed.  There is always "that guy" at the table.  Whether it be a game of Battletech, Warhammer, Dungeons and Dragons, or a simple ga...

FNF: To DM or Not to DM (Dungeons and Dragons)

Image
TO DM OR NOT TO DM That is the inner war in my head right now, and I'd like to make it my Friday Night Fight blog post this week. Recently I've been at odds with myself about continuing to be a DM and to continue to play Dungeons and Dragons altogether. What is a DM? To bring things in perspective, for those that don't know what a DM is:  A DM, short for Dungeon Master, is the game's administrator, arbitrator, and referee all in one, with the game being an interactive story where the players (everyone else but the DM) goes about the story as administered by the DM. This requires a LOT of planning, understanding the game, and having good repour with those at the table.  Some of the aspects of DMing include, but not limited to: ** knowing the game world's basic (and sometimes advanced) mechanics, such as the whos who of the world, the "relative to Earth" time setting, what is and is not in the game world, etc. ** general tabletop wargaming and board game con...

Opinion/Review: Different Fish and Game Websites, Northwest Edition

Image
The Many Departments of Fish and Game Hello and welcome.  I talk about fishing quite a bit in my blog and YouTube channel, and I reference Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) quite a bit.  Since not all Department of Fish and Game are the same, I thought to do a comparative analysis and review of the Departments of Fish and Game (or equivalent title).  With my love of fishing, this will expand to other regions around the US as well. The sites covered in this one are: Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG):   Home Page, Alaska Department of Fish and Game Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW):   Home | Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW):   Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (myodfw.com) This blog post will focus on the Great Northwest states of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska.  The goal of this blog series is to compare/contrast and give a generally opinionat...
