FNF: Federal (control) vs. AK Subsistence Hunting and Fishing

Image
This week on Friday Night Fights, I bring to you a new swing in the ever growing battle between the Federal Government's attempt over control over all VS States and the management of their land and resources.  This time around, it is Federal Government Vs. Subsistence Fishing and Hunting in Alaska. The US Department of the Interior Melissa Schwarts prepared a statement where (i'm summarizing this) she accused the ADFG of allowing subsistence fishing of the Kuskokwim river, which is part of the Yukon River Systems, which is in violation of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act Title 8.  Her reasoning is because of PREDICTED low numbers of Chum and Chinook salmon that now require limited openings to federally qualified rural residents. In other words......  control. The area in question is home to several different villages where subsistence fishing is a way of life and engrained into these villages, and their peoples' cultures for many generations....

3D Printing: Wrong Tech for Food?

Image
Alright everyone, it's happened twice, so it's time to write about it.  I'm all about using 3D printers to create amazing things, but I have a serious problem with this one. In the last week I've read three articles involving "CULTURED MEAT" involving technology and it really kind of has me chapped a bit.  I'm chapped because it's technology that I'm interested in and it's cool tech, but is it the wrong tech? I've decided I'm going to call these articles out and discuss some finer points, namely from a food sustainability point of view, and I'll let you decide if the cool tech is worth it or just some corporation trying to destroy things again. pic courtesy Emerging Tech Brew; this is the Cultured Meat Factory The first article comes to me courtesy of the Emerging Tech Brew.  It posted the following article:  Challenges in Scaling Cultivated Meat...  (I paraphrase titles of links).  Reading over the article, and digging into the tec...

Fishing in AK: the Spring Spawn

Image
It's getting that time of the year when Interior Alaska starts to experience break-up.  As the ice melts, the fish will begin their spring spawning, and with spring spawning come all the fishing of the year.  However, why should the spring spawn matter to a fisherman?  This article will talk about some reasons why, as well as pass along some useful tips to make your Spring Fishing successful. "But Mr. Jon, why does the Spring Spawn matter?"   There is a lot of things going on in the water under the ice.  As the ice begins to melt, the fish begin to slowly move toward the surface, adjusting their depth to their preferred water temp inside the water column.   Once the Spring Spawn happens, and not just for fish but for all aquatic life such as bugs, each of these species will migrate to that preferred temp.  As well all know, fish will eat their own.  A school of tiny fish is just a platter of food to a much larger fish.  At tha...

Random Word: Down

Image
Today, I happen to be associating with other departments during a few work-related tasks and I asked one of them to give me a random word.  Today's word is DOWN.  As always, I will briefly define the word, then discuss how that word applies to tabletop gaming, fishing, and 3D printing. There are many definitions related to the word down.  I will use the first one from the Merrian-Webster Dictionary.  Down is defined as: Definition of down (Entry 1 of 8) 1a(1): toward or in a lower physical position, Don't look down.  Pull down the blind. (2): to a lying or sitting position.  Please sit down. (3): toward or to the ground, floor, or bottom.  burned the house down.  fell down Down Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster ------------------------------------------------------------------- When it comes to tabletop gaming, getting in a "down" position can mean multiple things, both positive and negative.  It would all depend on your perception o...

Random Word: Discombobulated

Image
Another day, another word.  This time I was given the word "Discombobulated" by a good friend of mine.  As usual, I will define the word, then write about how it relates to tabletop gaming, fishing, and 3D printing. According to Websters Dictionary, the word "Discombobulated" is defined as informally to be confused or disordered.  It is the past tense of "Discombobulate" which is defined as to cause or be in a state of confusion, upset, or disorientated. Discombobulate Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster As the word "Discombobulated" applies to tabletop gaming, I can think of two different instances where it applies.  The first one applies to Dungeons and Dragons and the second one applies to tabletop wargaming. First, the Dungeons and Dragons aspect.  There is a Confused condition, which is the most direct application to the character, and the spell "Confusion" which applies said condition.  Most directly, the target of the con...

Random Word: F[iretr]uck

Image
Today we are all having a so-so/bad day in the office... one of those "if it ain't one thing its another" kind of days.  I asked one of my co-workers for a Random Word and he gave me F[iretr]uck.  This one might be a bit difficult, but here we go.  To summarize, I will use the word (or associated synonym/meaning/intent in this particular instance), give its definition, and write about how it applies to tabletop gaming, fishing, and 3D printing. As defined by Meriam-Webster, the definition is defined in an obscene or vulgar manner as to copulate or breed, used as a transitive verb to express emotions of anger, contempt, disgust, etc., or used as a transitive verb to represent being cheated/slighted/screwed over Fuck Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster ------------------------------------------------------------------------- First, tabletop gaming, and yet for the third post now I find myself talking about "That Guy" again, or TG for short.  He is the one ...

Opinion/Review: Different Fish and Game Websites, Northwest Edition

Image
The Many Departments of Fish and Game Hello and welcome.  I talk about fishing quite a bit in my blog and YouTube channel, and I reference Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) quite a bit.  Since not all Department of Fish and Game are the same, I thought to do a comparative analysis and review of the Departments of Fish and Game (or equivalent title).  With my love of fishing, this will expand to other regions around the US as well. The sites covered in this one are: Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG):   Home Page, Alaska Department of Fish and Game Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW):   Home | Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW):   Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife (myodfw.com) This blog post will focus on the Great Northwest states of Washington, Oregon, and Alaska.  The goal of this blog series is to compare/contrast and give a generally opinionat...

FISHING SCIENCE EXPERIMENT: Water Beads for Fishing DIY

Image
OVERVIEW: I've had this odd thought of using Orbeez or similar Water Beads for Fishing.  This odd thought spawned several questions about these little things.  For the rest of the documents, I will simply refer to them as Orbs. I will label this a Fishing Science Experiment - and if all goes well enough, more experiments will happen in the future. Note:  this will have a lot of science-like jargon in it, and it may seem a bit dry in its final version. HYPOTHESIS:    Can Orbs be used for Fishing as an artificial bait? OTHER RELATED QUESTIONS: ** What is an Orb made of? ** Will they only absorb water?  Oils?  Juices?  Fuel?  Urine?  - THIS QUESTION WILL DEFINITELY SPAWN INTO OTHER SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS **  If the water is infused (such as tea, coffee, etc), will the infusion transfer into the Orbs?   **  Will absorbed liquids leech out if placed in water? **  How will the Orbs react when being pierced for an extended...
