3D Printer Struggles 2022
3D Printing 2022 Struggles
So I've Had Some Struggles...
...Most of them have been minor mechanical issues - tramming the bed, clogged nozzles, and the like. Others have been more... mental struggles... that are harder to overcome.
Yes, 3D printing is a fun hobby. It's a blast to be able to print anything that I can find on Thingiverse or Yeggi or other sites and print them. I made a cool 3D printed Halloween Costume. I have printed a variety of gifts for family and friends. I've created 3D printed 40k and D&D terrain.
...but at what cost...
I know the 3D printing world has become more and more cost efficient over the years. To replace most of my parts is less than $20 and a couple more in shipping from either Amazon or EBay. Filament runs ~$25 a roll.
... but at what cost to me mentally...
I've put a lot of time and effort into these two machines. When they are working, life is good. When they are not, it's a frustrating, self-perpetuating nightmare and they go cold for days or weeks at a time until I calm down and resolve the fix.
Making them work for me in 2022 and beyond
So I've decided that these two and future printers will be "robot slaves of my very own" to quote the spasmatic alien Zim.
I've found a variety of different ways to circumvent copyright, through both creating 3d models of my own and also through the use of understanding the Creative Commons Licensing.
Creative Commons still is a bit fuzzy when it comes to 3D printing, primarily because of the act of creating the model can be protected, but printing and distributing a physical object "like the model" cannot, unless certain keywords or labels are tagged to the 3D model when it is published/distributed.
Also, there are several arguments out on the web that state "once a file is uploaded to Thingiverse, then it's in the public domain" and that is where and why Creative Commons Licensing applies to 3D modeling... to protect the creator.
So, with navigating these obstacles, i've semi-hatched a plan to make fishing lure parts (not the complete lure themselves, just parts) and distribute them on an Etsy page, along with the 3D files as well.
I'm getting fairly decent at using TinkerCAD also.
Finally, at the very least, my 3D printers will give me show props for my YouTube Channel.
Going Forward
I'm no business genius. Business was never really taught or engrained into me. Other things were in the last 20 years. Its rough.
I'm finding the biggest mental challenge of all is reprogramming myself so I can be more business-focused, get this baby seed in my brain to bloom, and hopefully share my knowledge, xp, and ideas with the world via 3D printers.
Wish me luck, Godspeed to you all, and remember
Fishing is Life, and for everything else, there's coffee.
Happy fishing and happy gaming.
