Fishing Videos: A Flashback to Video Editing

A LONG TIME AGO...

A long time ago, when I was 19-20, bored in my barracks room, I had just recently bought a stop-motion camera that came with some video editing software.  Back then, I had begun rebuilding my Transformers collection since I was an adult now with my own paycheck.  It gave me something to do and kept me out of trouble during the week.

I would do various stop-motion animations of my Transformers doing things and post the videos on my MySpace page.  My then girlfriend at the time, now ex-wife, thought I was a nerd but she helped and liked the outcome of the videos in question.

FAST FORWARD TO 2022

Let's fast forward 20 years or so.  I'm now 40.  I decided that in 2022 I would build up my presence online again, but this time for those things I like to do - fishing, tabletop gaming, and 3d printing - and hopefully someone learns along the way.

I've recently started a series of videos where I do fishing activities with my daughters, primarily because out of my family, my two daughters are my fishing partners - not my son or my wife.  Since its still winter, with butt-loads of snow and super low temperatures, I decided to do some lure making videos.  Since we are all sick, there was no complaints.

SHOOTING THE VIDEO

So last Saturday, Feb 12th, we did just that.  I got all of my "organized mess" out and we burned over three hours building a variety of different lures.  The synopsis is as followed:

* Inline Spinning Lures - most people refer to them as "spinners" or "rooster tails" or similar jargon

* Wedding Ring Lures

* Spoon re-rigging to bring them into regulation (and we added hoochies to the ends)

* My eldest Ana assembled her own 3D printed crankbait, found some images of baitfish, and applied stickers

* Samantha and I built some larger Spinnerbaits with multiple spinning blades

* Even though I said it, we never got around to making wet flies.  We will need to do another video on that once I can go buy some more appropriate hooks.

The kids were exhausted, but it was a good experience for all of us, and some family bonding.

EDITING THE VIDEOS

My video skills have gone down extremely sharp over the last 20 years.  I'll admit it, I suck at filming now.

On top of that, there is sooooooooo many different types of video editing software out there, its mind boggling. At first I tried DaVinci Resolve 17, but the GUI is just too much.  If I can figure out how to flip a video 90 degrees in DaVinci, i'd be golden.  Instead, I just went with Microsoft's built-in Video Editor.

It did it's job.  As Samantha likes to say... "it is what it is"

It was a fun project taking all the several hours of clips, trimming, transitioning, and merging them all together into one video.

MS Video Editor had some fun wording effects, scene transitional cards, and special effects.  I didn't use it all, but overall, it was a fun experience.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, part 1 and 2 of our adventure in lure making is up on my YouTube Channel here:

There will be more parts in the future as I catch up in Video Editing over the last 20-someodd years that I've neglected my skills.
