Random Word: F[iretr]uck

Today we are all having a so-so/bad day in the office... one of those "if it ain't one thing its another" kind of days.  I asked one of my co-workers for a Random Word and he gave me F[iretr]uck.  This one might be a bit difficult, but here we go.  To summarize, I will use the word (or associated synonym/meaning/intent in this particular instance), give its definition, and write about how it applies to tabletop gaming, fishing, and 3D printing.

As defined by Meriam-Webster, the definition is defined in an obscene or vulgar manner as to copulate or breed, used as a transitive verb to express emotions of anger, contempt, disgust, etc., or used as a transitive verb to represent being cheated/slighted/screwed over

Fuck Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, tabletop gaming, and yet for the third post now I find myself talking about "That Guy" again, or TG for short.  He is the one that is the most expected to use the word in question, especially when the game doesn't go his way.  That's all I will mention on the subject.

There is another instance, which is how the Teifling race came into being, and that is the copulation angle of the word.  In most fantasy, and some sci-fi settings (looking at you, Captain Kirk), some races came into being by copulation by powerful otherworldly entities.  Either these entities did the deed themselves, or used magic/science to force uncommon creatures to copulate to create the results.

More specifically, there is a stereotype that comes up quite a bit in D&D and that is the Horny Bard.  The stereotype, as I know it, is that the Bard is always horny and will copulate with nearly anything and everything it can.  The walking and talking version of Internet Rule 34.

In some instances in tabletop gaming, the use of the word could fall into the transitive verb of being cheated or slighted, namely by the "dice gods" a.k.a. rolling poorly on the dice.  No matter the context of the game - Warhammer 40k, D&D, Monopoly - if rolling a die or dice exists, this natural slight has a chance of happening.

My favorite and most recent story regarding this is the fact that my players believe that I have the "curse of the doubles" as they call it.  If you ask me to roll a pair dice - no matter where they came from, who owns them, how old/new they are, or who made them - there is an above 50% chance that I will roll doubles of whatever number I roll.  I have analyzed my dice rolling techniques.  I have changed hands.  I have used dice towers 3D printed in various shapes and sizes.  I have exchanged my dice multiple times.  No matter, this still exists.

Sometime this is beneficial to the players, such as when dealing 2d6 greatsword damage and rolling a pair of 1's or 2's.  The feeling of being slighted by the DM (that's me, Mr. Jon) is when I'm rolling to hit, throw double 20s on disadvantage, or double 19s on the save when the player needs the monster to fail.  (Note:  I normally retcon and find some b.s. excuse to let the monster fail if it failing progresses the storyline).

------------------------------------------------------------------------

With regards to fishing, the word can be applied in the definition of copulation and the transitive verb of being cheated/slighted.  This one might be a stretch, so bear with me.  What comes to mind is fish breeding techniques and terminology, "lady luck" having her way in catching a fish, or getting screwed over by TG doing some serious combat fishing.

Fish breed.  That is how fish species propagate and survive.  Every year, hundreds of thousands of Salmon flock to the southern portions of Alaska to swim upstream to several rivers to spawn - the act of fish copulating to keep the species going.

This fish spawning is a big deal in Alaska, as there are several "Salmon Runs" throughout the Summer or Fall.   Many people, residents and non-residents alike, along with small and big fishing companies, get their permits to go catch their limit of Salmon.  I've covered Salmon Runs at length in other blog posts.

This has a tendency to bring out several TGs to be jerks and make you, the fisher, feel cheated of slighted because of any particular reason that comes out of TG's mouth, which leads to the use of the word in question being slung as insults.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Onto 3D printing, this is where the use of the word as an insult or transitive verb.  Home use 3D printers are very touchy, with one or two settings off could ruin your whole print, or part of your print, or the printer itself.

I can recount plenty of instances where I was cussing up a storm involving the use of the word to describe how overly frustrated I was at my 3D Printers for not functioning in one way or another.

Another instance, which I will leave to your imagination dear reader, is the act of 3D printing NSFW objects/toys/etc. for the bedroom.  There are plenty of articles about 3D printing these objects and I will leave that up to your own Google Searching.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

In conclusion, I talked about the word F[iretr]uck in terms of tabletop gaming, fishing, and 3D printing.  It is a verb that can mean to copulate/reproduce or a transitive verb to express negative emotion.  I hope you've enjoyed my brief blog post.  I look forward to writing my next Random Word post (and hopefully TG doesn't get brought up again for awhile).

Thank you for reading.
